Artist and writer Carmen Winant (b. 1983 in San Francisco) has been described as a photographer who does not author her own pictures. Drawing on found and archival images to create narratives surrounding female experience - pleasure; pain; childbirth - and to ignite conversations surrounding violence, submission, and the question of whether it is possible to “picture” liberation, Winant produces work on a scale that matches the beauty, difficulty, and necessary imagination of her thematic interests.
Carmen Winant has exhibited both nationally and internationally at the Worcester Museum of Art, Massachusetts, 14a, Hamburg, Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio, Stene Projects, Stockholm, Aperture Foundation Gallery, NYC, and Sculpture Center, NYC. In 2018, Winant’s work My Birth was exhibited in MoMA’s Being: New Photography exhibition. In 2019, Winant was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in photography.
