While spending time in the French Mediterranean city of Sète, he documented its inhabitants, urban spaces and culture, with particular focus on the Festival of St. Louis and its sport of water jousting. As Anderson states, I decided to make flags out of photographs. He was inspired to play with colours (blue, white and red), to use the symbols of colour to reflect on the very ideas of symbols and of identity. Among the numerous captivating images he produced, the thrilling shots of water jousters against a blue sky are most memorable.

Christopher Anderson (born 1969 in British Columbia, Canada) is a highly acclaimed contemporary photographer and a member of Magnum Photos, celebrated for his emotionally charged, vividly colored images. He first gained international recognition in 1999 when he boarded a handmade wooden boat with Haitian immigrants attempting to reach the United States, a harrowing, life-threatening journey that earned him the prestigious Robert Capa Gold Medal.
Over time, Anderson shifted away from traditional, objective photojournalism, instead pioneering a highly subjective, intimate style of image-making that he describes as "experiential documentary." His later work frequently explores deep personal connections, family dynamics, and the atmospheric texture of urban life. He has published numerous highly sought-after photobooks, many of which are centered around his immediate family, such as Son, Pia, and Marion, as well as broader, cinematic explorations of society and place, including Approximate Joy, Bleu Blanc Rouge, and Stump. Through his masterful use of light, shadow, and color, Anderson transforms deeply personal observations into universal explorations of love, anxiety, and the human condition.
