Gary Schneider (born 1954 in East London, South Africa) is a South African-born American photographer known for his experimental approaches to portraiture and his reputation as a master photographic printer.
Schneider earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town, and a Master of Fine Arts from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn after relocating to New York in the late 1970s. In 1981, alongside his partner John Erdman, he established Schneider/Erdman Inc., an East Village-based photo lab. Through this studio, Schneider became a highly sought-after printer, producing iconic photographic prints for legendary artists including Peter Hujar, David Wojnarowicz, and Irving Penn.
In his personal artistic practice, Schneider is celebrated for blurring the lines between biology, science, and photography. His acclaimed 1997 series, Genetic Self-Portrait, utilized microscopy, X-rays, and photograms of his DNA, blood, and hair to create a biological autobiography.
In 2019 he published Salters Cottages, a book dedicated to his mentor Peter Hujar. The book is an assembly of film stills drawn from a 16mm short film Schneider directed in 1981 at a seaside cottage community on Long Island. Paying homage to Jean Genet’s Un Chant d'Amour, the project features appearances by Hujar, John Erdman, Suzanne Joelson, and Gary Stephan, deeply exploring themes of voyeurism and intimacy.
His work is held in the permanent collections of major institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
