Geert Goiris (born 1971 in Bornem, Belgium) is a contemporary visual artist and photographer renowned for his evocative, unsettling depictions of desolate landscapes, architectural ruins, and uncanny natural phenomena. He studied photography at the LUCA School of Arts in Genk and completed post-graduate studies at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp. Working primarily with large- and medium-format analog cameras, Goiris captures a sense of quiet tension and expectant stillness that he terms "trauma landscape." His compositions, ranging from barren Arctic plains and industrial mega-structures to isolated flora, exist in an ambiguous realm between reality and speculative fiction, evoking themes of environmental vulnerability, deep time, and human absence. Goiris has published several acclaimed artist books, including Peak Oil, Proliferation, and Lying Awake, cementing his reputation for turning rigorous documentary observation into enigmatic, painterly imagery. His work is exhibited widely at international museums and held in prominent public and private collections, including the Centre Pompidou andthe Museum Folkwang.
