Hernan Bas, American, b. 1978
In a bold, expressionistic practice that spans painting, video, installation, and works on paper, Hernan Bas explores desire, adventure, and adolescence. His work is steeped in narrative, and his influences span classical poetry, religious myths, and the heightened sensuality of Gothic and Romantic literature. Bas’s large-scale portraits and landscapes often feature vivid color palettes, phantasmagoric forms, and androgynous young men. With these compositional elements, the artist gives classical painting traditions a queer, contemporary update. Bas studied at the New World School of the Arts and has exhibited in New York, London, Tokyo, Paris, Zürich, and Hong Kong. His work belongs in the collections of the MOMA, New York, the SFMOMA, The Whitney Museum New York, the Rubell Museum and the Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
