Joan Fontcuberta’s multifaceted photographic practice investigates the slippery boundary between truth and illusion, employing conceptual irony, elaborate staging, and pseudo-documentary framing to interrogate the authority of the photographic medium. Born in Barcelona in 1955, Fontcuberta has worked throughout his career as an artist, theorist, critic, and historian, deeply engaging with the ways images construct our understanding of history, science, and nature. Rather than treating the camera as a passive recorder of objective reality, he constructs elaborate, fictional photographic archives, most famously Herbarium, which presents cataloged botanical specimens actually fashioned from discarded plastic and industrial debris; Sputnik, documenting a fictional Soviet cosmonaut; and Miracles, depicting modern religious phenomena.
Across these projects, Fontcuberta blurs the lines between science and fiction, anticipating the rise of digital manipulation and generative fabrication long before the era of synthetic media. Within the Bushwick sur Seine framework, his oeuvre serves as an essential theoretical and visual counterpoint, examining how mechanical reproducibility and archival presentation can be subverted to question the very nature of photographic truth.
Trepat: A Case Study in Avant-Garde Photography is an elaborate artistic project and conceptual photo hoax created by Spanish artist and photographer Joan Fontcuberta in 2014.
The project claims that Josep Trepat Galceran (1881–1974), founder of a 1914 agricultural machinery factory in Tàrrega, Spain, commissioned famous avant-garde photographers, such as Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy, Alexander Rodchenko, and Walker Evans, to document his factory and modernize his corporate image.
The historical narrative and many of the associated photographs are an elaborate fiction. Fontcuberta digitally manipulated or contextualized iconic images from 20th-century art history to falsely place these modern masters inside the Catalan factory. [1]
The project was debuted as an exhibition curated by Fontcuberta at the Rencontres d'Arles photography festival in July 2014.
