Marnix Goossens (born 1970 in Leeuwarden, Netherlands) is a contemporary Dutch photographer renowned for his serene, highly detailed studies of nature, domestic interiors, and everyday landscapes. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and completed residencies at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam. Goossens works primarily with a large-format camera, a meticulous process that allows him to capture extraordinary texture, subtle color palettes, and intense visual clarity. His photographs frequently explore the intersection between natural, untamed elements and human intervention, turning mundane or quiet scenes—such as overgrown flora, domestic houseplants, and unassuming suburban views—into contemplative, painterly compositions. Over his career, Goossens has published several acclaimed photobooks, including Yonder, Regarding Nature, and Deep Light, solidifying his position as a key voice in contemporary Dutch photography. Today, his work is exhibited internationally and held in major public and private collections, including the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
Deep Light emphasises Goossens’ photography taken for a decade preceeding the book's publicatios. The selection for the book has been made in close collaboration with the artist. The arrangement of the photos encourages readers to explore the relationships between the different genres represented and the different images themselves.
Marnix Goossens’ work focuses on three main subjects: nature, portraits, and still lifes. Most of his photographs depict scenes from nature. Goossens creates highly-detailed images of trees, plants, and landscapes, he directs his attention to floral beauty, intriguing situations, and nature found in the human habitat. In his portraiture, he experiments with eliciting different personalities from the same person. His aim is not to merely depict his subjects’ physical appearance but to create fictional characters. He uses various objects and items of clothing to bring out his subjects’ desired expressions. His models include not only himself, but also relatives and friends. In his still lifes, Goossens contrasts functional, everyday objects with other categories of objects and their settings, thus engaging them in new relationships of form and structure.
