Ferry: West 23rd Street, Manhattan (taken December 23, 1935) is a classic photograph by Berenice Abbott produced as part of her landmark Federal Art Project, Changing New York (1935–1939).
The image documents the West 23rd Street Ferry Terminal along the Hudson River waterfront in Chelsea. At the time, this terminal was a major transit hub serving cross-river passenger ferries, including the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad ferries connecting Manhattan to train terminals in Hoboken and Jersey City. Abbott photographed the site during the winter of 1935, capturing the architectural scale of the waterfront infrastructure and the utilitarian flow of urban transit before major bridge and tunnel expansions rendered many Hudson River ferry routes obsolete.
